What
to do on St. Davids day?
Ideas
and Suggestions
St Davids Day is a day of celebration
in Wales and for the Cymry and persons of Welsh descent throughout the
world. Little may be known about the life of St David beyond the fact
that he was a saint and that he died in 589 A.D. but it doesn't matter.
His saints day is the occasion for the Welsh wherever they may be to
come together and celebrate their common heritage and tradition.
So what can you do to help
mark the event? Well, if you're lucky enough to be in Cardiff on March
1st you could always join the 5th Annual St Davids Day Parade. The
opening ceremony will be held at the National Museum of Wales and the
Parade will get underway at 1.15. It promises to be a lively event this
year. Full details can be found on the website here.
Of course most of our readers
will not be in Cardiff on the day but there are many other things that
we can do to mark the occasion.
Like Celtic music? You could
always tune in to IRFT Celtic Radio . The station
will be streaming Welsh music for the entire day starting at 6 p.m.
Pacific Standard Time on Februaury 29th and running until Midnight,
Pacific standard time on March 1st. More details here
and here.
Alternatively you could
explore the feast of nectared sweets that is modern Anglo-Welsh
literature. There are a number of reading suggestions on this page.
If activism is your thing you
might like to sign the online petition to make St Davids Day a national
holiday in Wales. This idea has been mooted several times recently only
to be rejected by the Westminster Parliament. We believe that it is an
idea whose time has come and we urge all our readers to sign. Here
in the USA a number of
individuals and organisations are working to make St Davids Day as
well known as St Patricks Day. Witness the efforts of the Chicago Tafia
in the YouTube video on this page. If getting up at the crack of dawn
and waving a flag on a street corner is not your thing why not send a
St Davids Day floral bouquet to your local TV or radio
station asking them to let their audience know that March 1st is a
special day?
We will be adding further
suggestions as we think of them. If you have any ideas please feel free
to email.
