Occasionally at
Americymru, we are asked to feature sites about Wales. This
week,
we are featuring a new site about a little-frequented part of
Carmarthenshire, which is off the well-beaten tourist path but deserves
to be better known. The Brechfa Forest is described in the
following terms at the official forestry Commission site:-
"The famous Brechfa Forest now managed by the Forestry Commission for timber production and recreation, has a long history. In the middle ages the forest was mainly oak and ash and was an important Royal hunting ground, while until the 20th Century wood from the forest was harvested to fuel the industrial needs of South Wales. As well as playing its part in the industrial revolution, timber was taken from the forest during the First World War to produce naphtha for use in making explosives. In 1919 the Forestry Commission became managers of the forest, creating its present status as a multi-purpose forest for timber production, recreation and wildlife conservation." The "Brechfa Forest Rural Photography and Tourist Website" has much more to say about this charming area including:- WHERE TO VISIT,PLACES TO STAY,OLD INNS,WHERE TO EAT, AND OTHER LOCAL INFORMATION. There are also several galleries of delightful rural photographs. The site is in the early stages of development but it is well worth a visit, as is the Brechfa forest itself. And...in closing I feel compelled to add that the people of Wales and the Welsh worldwide owe a huge debt of gratitude to the voters of Carmarthenshire. It was their votes that swung the Devolution referrendum result in the early hours of that fateful morning back in 1997. EVERYBODY should visit Carmarthenshire!!
