Many
historical events have
contributed to the survival of the Welsh social, cultural and liguistic
heritage. As the Wikipedia
reminds us:-
"The translation of the Bible into Welsh was important to the survival of the Welsh language. It had the effect, along with the Welsh translation of the Book of Common Prayer, of conferring status on Welsh as a liturgical language and vehicle for worship. This in turn led to its continued use as a means of everyday communication down to the present day despite the pressure of English." In the 1980's the campaign for a Welsh language television channel, spearheaded by the heroic gesture of Gwynfor Evans, ensured that Welsh continued to thrive in the age of TV. Wales also owes a debt to all those who campaigned tirelessly for the establishment of a devolved parliament in 1997. Indeed the seeds planted in that campaign may yet bear more fruit ( see - 'Support for Welsh Devolution - New Research' ) In
the age of the Internet Welsh
culture faces new challenges. The campaign for a .CYM sets out to
address these. Why do we need a .CYM? Here is a quote from the
dotcym.org website:-
"A .cym TLD will play a strategic role in validating Welsh culture and language in an age of increasing globalisation. It will make it easier for individuals and groups who wish to associate with the community to identify with other users around the world. The success of the dotCYM campaign will unite the Welsh-speaking communities across Wales, the UK, and the rest of the world. There are historic Welsh communities in North and South America, as well as Australia." We believe that the international Welsh community will benefit enourmously from the establishment of such a domain and we will be doing anything within our power to support this campaign. We urge all readers of this article to take themselves immediately to this page and sign the petition. Following that, grab one of the banners from this page and display it on your website, MySpace page etc. Together we can ensure that our joint heritage thrives in the digital age.
